This past week brought an extraordinary discovery to light for Ecotourism Nusa Penida at the Coral Cousins’ Reef Rehabilitation site, Coral Castle. While engaged in coral planted activities, our guests made an unexpected find—eggs nestled inside a coral colony. Little did we know this discovery would lead us to witness one of the ocean’s most miraculous phenomena: coral spawning.

For five nights, our team embarked on thrilling night dives, captivated by the beauty and rhythm of nature unfolding beneath the waves. These dives revealed a significant insight—we now know that in Nusa Penida, coral spawning occurs in November.

A Diverse Symphony of Life

Our observations documented four different coral genera across ten distinct colonies. Among these were four colonies of corals that had been planted three years ago by Coral Cousins Reef Rehabilitation e.V. This milestone is a testament to the success of our coral restoration efforts in creating resilient ecosystems that can reproduce naturally.

Why Coral Spawning Matters

Coral spawning is not just a visual spectacle—it’s critical for the health and longevity of coral reefs. During this event, corals release eggs and sperm into the water column in a synchronized dance, allowing fertilization to occur and new coral polyps to settle and grow. In Nusa Penida we have frequent water temperature changes that train our corals to different temperatures, including the predicted rise in ocean temperatures. As we are located in a main strait of the Indonesian Through-Flow that connects the Indian Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, our coral larvae is transported far to bring biodiversity and resilient to other reefs. Witnessing this process in a reef that has been actively restored speaks volumes about the effectiveness of rehabilitation efforts.
